The Chairperson of the AU Commission, Dr Nkosazana Zuma, has said that the
population of youths on the continent will be a quarter of the global
population by the year 2025.
Zuma said this in an address at the 102nd
International Labour Conference on Monday in Geneva, Switzerland.
She called
for more investments to promote job creation, achieve inclusive growth and
eradicate poverty on the continent.
``By all estimates, our continent is a
continent of young people, and it is getting younger,’’ she said.
Zuma noted
that by 2040, half of the world’s youth population would be Africans with women
and girls been a majority.
She said that Africa in the next 50 years would be
home to 1.1 billion workers.
Zuma also said African leaders believed job
creation is among the most important factors for achieving growth and
prosperity.
She noted that since Africa is a continent of young people,
there is the need for more investment to promote employment and provision of
entrepreneurial skills for youths.
“We are determined to step up our efforts
to promote job creation, work for the eradication of poverty, achieve growth and
allow equitable distribution, particularly for women and the youth.
Mr Guy
Ryder, the Director-General of International Labour Organisation (ILO) in his
welcome address, said it was encouraging to see African economies grow.
He
said the ILO was committed to working hand in hand with the AU and its African
social partners to make decent work for all a reality.
