NIGERIA defender Efe Ambrose has warned that the Super Eagles can’t afford to
take chances against Tahiti in their opening Group B match of the FIFA
Confederations Cup today.
African champions Nigeria face Oceanian
champions Tahiti, whose greatest achievement is qualifying for the Brazil 2013
Confederations Cup, at Belo Horizonte but Ambrose says the Eagles must
concentrate on the match lest their little known opponents create an
upset.
“The most important thing of all for us is to focus on this match.
It is a match we know we need to win and, to do that, we need to be fully
concentrated. We cannot afford to take any chances. Big shocks have happened
before in this kind of tournaments and we don’t want to be the victims this
time,” Ambrose told fifa.com
Previewing Nigeria’s group match against world
and European champions Spain which comes up at Fortaleza next Sunday, the Celtic
player, speaking against his Scottish club’s match experience against Barcelona
in last season’s UEFA Champions League at Celtic Park which the Catalans lost
1-2, said the result of the match could be down to teamwork if the Nigerian side
play together.
“It proved exactly what I said about football being all
about teamwork and playing together as one. No-one gave us a chance against a
team with Messi, Iniesta, Xavi and all the rest. Barcelona are special, and so
are Spain...If Nigeria can do the same – play as a team, stay united – we have a
chance in any match we play.”
We are the best team in Africa and I think
there is no reason for us to fear anyone,” Ambrose added.
